Valid for year : 2004

NKEC11 Coordination Chemistry, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Komplexkemi/

For:   BKM   FRIST   Kem

Prel. scheduled hours: 60
Rec. self-study hours: 140

  Area of Education: Science

Subject area: Chemistry

  Advancement level (A-D): C

Aim:
The aim of the course is to give both fundamental knowledge of and enter more deeply into the following areas: - The synthesis and properties of inorganic, organometallic and biological coordination compounds. The description of structures, electronic states and bonding in complexes using molecular orbital theory and group theory (mainly non-quantitative). The importance of coordiantion compounds in biology, geochemistry, materials science, and catalysis.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Inorganic Chemistry (NKEB23), Physical Chemistry (NKEB24 and 41), Mathematics B (NMAA34), or correspondingly

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Physical properties and geometries of d-block complexes. Ligand Field Theory. The spectrochemical series. Jahn-Teller distortion. Bio-inorganic complexes, their structures and functions. Point group symmetry of complexes and group theory. Molecular orbital theory for homo- and hetero-nuclear two-atoms molecules and linear molecules. Organometallic complexes: the 18-electron rule, structure and bonding in carbonyl complexes, a little about synthesis and reactions of organometallics. The laboratory course includes synthesis and characterisation of some inorganic and organometallic complexes and one bio-inorganic laboratory exercise. To some extent the laboratory course will be in the form of projects. The projects will be presented by the students at a seminar in the end of the course.
