Aim:
To give a fundamental knowledge in physical chemistry concerning thermodynamics and surface chemistry. To give an explanation on thermodynamic base of physical and technical processes.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
The student must have attended General chemistry NKEA26 or 20, Organic Chemistry 1 NKEA27, Biochemistry 1 NKEA28 and also Mathematics A - B NMAA33 - 34 or equivalent.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Chemical bonding NKEC62, Computational chemistry NKEC70, Surface & colloid chemistry TFKi30.
Organisation:
Lectures/lessons, laborations and computer exercises. The laboration course includes a minor project which is accounted for in a short seminar.
Course contents:
Therodynamics: The idea of a state and the state equations of gases. The first law of thermodynamics and thermochemistry. The second law, entropy and spontaneous reactions. Gibbs free energy and equilibria. Phase diagrams for one and two component systems. Chemical equilibria and their dependence on conditions.
