Aim:
The aim of the course is to give basic knowledge in the field of optoelectronics, including production and modulation of light (laser and light emitting diode (LED)) and optical fibres physical characteristics.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Participation in NFYC56 Solid State Physics and NFYC57 Physical Projects
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
Organisation:
Theory is given in form of lectures which are completed with calculating exercises. Participation in projects and possible organized studytrips is compulsory.
Course contents:
Opto-electronical basic knowledge : modulation of light. Construction and function of lightdiodes as well as different laser-types. Optical fibres as light guide. Description and measurement of some physical magnitudes which characterize different fiber types. Indexprofile, attentuation, modes, numerical "apertur", dispersion and bandwidth. Fiber production (in theory, ev. also studytrip), micro lenses, fiber connectors, fiber couplers and coupling factor.
