| Aim: The aim of this course is that the student will arrive at an understanding of the theory and philosophy of science, and more specifically in the ecological field. Having successfully completed this course, the student is expected to:

| Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered) Admission requirements for master programme in biology. Knowledge in ecological methodology and theory (structure and dynamics of populations, ecological communities and ecosystems). Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding. |

| Organisation: The course is based on regular seminars with thorough discussions of selected literature and lectures. Furthermore, students are requested to produce a written essay. |

| Course contents: Literature studies of commented scientific papers on various ecological issues such as ecological theories and principles; ecological concepts and method problems; complexity in ecological systems. The development of scientific thinking and ideas in biology and more specifically ecology. |
