Aim:
The overall goal of this course is for the students to gain general knowledge of the historical, economic, cultural and social development in Sweden from the Viking Era to the present day in a European perspective, which has fundamental significance for understanding Swedish society today and Sweden‚s place in European history. Furthermore, by means of a project produced by working in groups the participants in the course will apply investigative methods and thus develop theoretical skills.

Organisation:
The course is organised around a series of lectures. The students shall also participate in the completion of a group project

Course contents:
The course‚s introductory series of lectures present a survey of Sweden‚s political, economic, cultural and social development from the Viking Age to the present day within a European perspective. The goal of this part of the course is to emphasise the long-term context. This historical outline provides a basis for the next part of the course that consists of a series of thematically organised lectures, which may can treat such topics as the power of the state and the church during the Middle Ages, the significance of early mining and manufacturing in Swedish politics, economic and technical development, the growth of the Swedish Model, nationalistic currents in Sweden and Europe, and the question of Swedish neutrality in European power politics. In the third part of the course the student participates in a small group that completes an in-depth study through which the student receives training in research methods and theoretical aspects of the discipline are illustrated.

Written examination. Written group assignment.

Grades are given as ‘Fail’ or ‘Pass’. To receive the grade Pass, in addition to passing the written examination (P/F), the written group project must be treated in a seminar (P/F).
