Aim:
The aim is to give the student knowledge of the use and elementary analysis of methods in numerical linear algebra, interpolation and approximation, and further to give the ability to choose relevant methods and apply them for the solution of mathematical problems on the computer.
Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Knowledge of mathematics as taught in the first year of the mathematics program, at least 25 points passed. All computer exercises in those courses passed.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.
Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and computer exercises. Participation in the computer exercises is compulsory.
Course contents:
Linear algebra: Gaussian elimination, LU- factorization, iterative improvement. Interpolation with polynomials and splines.
Approximation: Least squares, a short description of Chebyshevapproximation.
Computer experiments using MATLAB.
