Valid for year : 2007

TNM078 Image Based Rendering, 7,5 ECTS credits.
/Imagebased rendering/

For:   ACG   MT

Prel. scheduled hours: 36
Rec. self-study hours: 164

  Area of Education: Technology

Subject area: Computer Engineering/Media Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
Create knowledge and skills in current computer graphics methods where photographic source material is utilized for the creation of virtual models and for increasing the realism of synthetic images.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TNM002/TNM005 Datorgrafik, TNM008 3D datorgrafik och VR, TNG002 Linjär algebra, TNG010 Flervariabelanalys, Programmering

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course starts with a series of lectures, providing an overview and presenting the theory in the field. The lecture material is accompanied by a set of laboratory exercises to demonstrate the theory in action. Towards the end of the course there is a more extensive project assignment. At the end of the course a written exam is given. To complete the course, students must have passed the lab exercises, the project assignment and the written exam. Grades are based entirely on the written exam.

Course contents:
Image based rendering: internal views (panoramic images), interpolation between multiple external views, layered depth images. Mixed techniques for increased dynamics and interactivity. Image based lighting: Light fields, reflection fields. Virtual objects in real lighting, real objects in virtual lighting. Image based modeling: Manual and automated extraction of geometric data from photographic images. Synthesis of textures from photographs. Strategies for interpolation and extrapolation of missing data. The learning outcomes from the course will enable the students to:
  • perform image based rendering modelling and lighting calculations
  • capture and render HDR images
  • manipulate HDR images
  • develop image based modeling algorithms
  • implement texture sythesis algorithms
  • differentiate between various models of image based algorithms and techniques

Course literature:
The course is oriented towards current research and development, and the course material will consist mainly of research papers in the field, plus possibly some additional internal material.
