Aim:
The aim of the course is to give knowledge about advanced Internet protocols, internetworking technologies, protocol design and an overview of the most recent development in this area. Some basic theory for network calculus is also covered by this course. After completing the course the student is expected to be able to:
  • Explain how an internet works, which different components are included and why they are included.
  • Give an account of how Internet works on protocol level, what protocols are used, and what functionality these protocols contribute with.
  • Choose an appropriate protocol for a new application considering the requirements and usage of the application.
  • Understand descriptions of new protocols for Internet.


Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge in Computer Science.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Supplementary courses:
Computer Security, Image and Audio Coding, Radio Communication, and various network courses

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, problem-solving classes and a home assignment.

Course contents:
  • Background: History of the Internet, Internet standardisation administration and processes
  • Models: The OSI model and its relation to TCP/IP
  • Various Internet protocols
  • Multicasting: MADCAP, MZAP, reliable multicast
  • Autoconfiguration: BOOTP, DHCP, autoconfiguration of addresses
  • Real Time Streaming: RTP, RTCP, RTSP, SDP, problems in real time communication
  • Voice over IP: SIP, H.323, Softswitch, MGCP, MEGACO
  • Future of TCP/IP Network: IPv6, QoS in IP Networks, Ad Hoc networking
