TMKM90 Engineering Materials - Deformation and Fracture, 6 ECTS credits.
/Konstruktionsmaterial - deformation och brott/

For:   I   Ii   M   MI   Y

Prel. scheduled hours: 52
Rec. self-study hours: 108

  Area of Education: Technlogy

Subject area: Mechanical Engineering

  Advancement level (A-D): D

Aim:
The course gives a deeper knowledge about creep deformation, fracture mechanics and fracture mechanisms in metallic materials. The emphasis is on the application of materials, i.e. the properties when they are exposed to cracking, fatigue, loads at high temperature and other kinds of life limiting conditions. The knowledge is used in a section about failure analysis.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Engineering Materials Metals, TMKM04

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The teaching consists of lectures, tutorials and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Crystallographic texture after deformation and orientation effects. Creep mechanisms and creep fracture. Ductile fracture, brittle fracture, fatigue fracture and environment assisted fracture. The basis of fracture mechanics and the effect of microstructure on fracture toughness. The method of failure analysis.

Course literature:
Herzberg: "Deformation and Fracture Mechanics of Engineering Materials", Lab. instructions.

Examination:
Written examination
