Aim:
To give the student a fundamental knowledge of physical chemistry concerning reaction kinetics, quantum chemistry and basic molecular spectroscopy.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
The student must have attended General chemistry 1- - 2 NKEA18 - 19 or NKEA20, Organic Chemistry 1 NKEA16, Biochemistry 1 NKEA17 and also Mathematics A NMAA34 or equivalent.
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures/lessons, laborations and computer exercises.

Course contents:
Kinetics: Rate equations and their integration, the concepts of reaction order, half life, mechanisms, catalysis and photochemistry. Techniques for measuring fast reactions; flow, flash and relaxation methods. Activation energies and molecular reaction dynamics.
Quantum chemistry: Basic quantum mechanics and cheimical applications.
Spectroscopy: Rotational, vibrational and electron orbital energies. Infrared and visual/UV spectroscopy. Magnetic resonance methods; NMR, ESR.
