Aim:
The aim of the course is to give students an insight into product development, its organization and tools, and its connection to other activities in the company.
The goals of knowledge for the course are:
- knowledge about types of activities performed during product design and development.
- knowledge about how engineering designers work and how a product is represented during design.
- knowledge about how manufacturing issues need to be considered during design and the impact on manufacturing by design.
The goals of skills for the course are:
- to be able to apply the product design theory on a small conceptual product design task.
- to be able to practice product design in a small design team.
- to be able to communicate about product design both literally and orally.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Knowledge in mechanical engineering and Three years of completed university studies with an engineering major

Organisation:
Lectures cover theory, tools and methods. Seminars will be used for minor group activities and tool training. A small development project will be run in groups of 4-5 students.

Course contents:
- Strategy: Development process and organization, classes of products.
- Specification: Customer needs and translation to product specification.
- Concenpt , generation and selections: Functions, organs and components, idea generation methods, evaluation techniques.
- PProduct architecture: Integral and modular design, organ interfaces and grouping, product structure.
- Patents: How are patent issues tackled in product design
- Industrial design: Its role for the product and for the company.
- Prototyping: Various types of prototypes and their importance and use.
- Management: Planning and economics.
- Environment: How does product design affect the environment
