TNK068 Road Safety Audit and Information Technology Systems, 9 ECTS credits.
/Road Safety Audit and Information Technology Systems/

For:   ITS

Prel. scheduled hours: 72
Rec. self-study hours: 168

  Area of Education: Technology

Main field of studies: Transportation Systems Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
Road Safety Audit (RSA) is an increasing method worldwide to reduce road crashes and improve the safety level in infrastructure engineering for all road users. Use of information technology and database analysis is an important part of the methodology. The aim of the course is to provide students with the basic theoretical and practical knowledge about RSA and its applications
After completion of the course the student will be able to
  • Identify common traffic safety problems
  • Understand how to structure a RSA report and use checklists easily
  • Review several traffic simulation softwares or techniques that have been used (partly or fully) in analysing road accidents.
  • Carry out road safety audit investigations as a member of a RSA team
  • Perform a case study and site visit
  • Determine and motivate on what problems to investigate for on site visits.
  • Set up RSA activity plan and writing a RSA report.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Basic knowledge of traffic safety required.

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course includes lectures, group works and field study, which will be presented in writing and orally. The main used learning method in the course is Problem-based learning (PBL), which leads students to work in small groups under the guidance of the instructor. Each group of students should prepare seminar presentation by the end of each part of the course and be opponents on each otherâ?Ts papers.
The course runs over the entire autumn semester.

Course contents:
The course is divided into two parts of which the first gives general overview to RSA, covering a range of topics:
  • International RSA Practice.
  • The principles and issues of road safety audit.
  • Stages of a road safety audit.
  • The role and responsibility of the auditor/team.
  • Legal status of a safety audit report.
  • Examples of good and bad road safety audit practice.
  • The Role of ITS applications.
  • Before and after study techniques and conflict studies technique.
  • How to use RSA checklist for each stage and write final road safety audit report.
The second part is a practical project, which will help students to apply some of the learning methods covered in the course in a real-world application. The suggested scenario in this project is to give the department of transportation in Norrköping city an effective RSA study about the safety problems and possible countermeasures in one selected hazard location in Norrköping city. Students will select a specific site (e.g. intersection) around Campus (or in Norrköping City) to audit on the basis of RSA checklists and guidelines, objective statistics, drawings, sketches, photographs, subjective knowledge, etc.
