Aim:
The objective of the course is to provide the students with basic knowledge about various modelling methods in management science, with large emphasis on computer-based simulation and optimisation. That includes the knowledge about how to build and use models to understand, change or control a part of reality that model is representing. The goal is also to familiarise students with various software tools useful in such modelling projects.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
TAOP27 Operations Research, extended course
TAMS65 Mathematical Statistics, second course
Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The lectures will cover the theories of modelling, simulation and optimisation; from problem formulation to implementation of the solutions. Case studies (laboratory assignments) will show how the theories presented at the lectures can be applied to practical problems. Seminars will be used for presentation and discussion of the results from case studies and lab assignments. The course is given in cooperation with Division of Optimisation (MAI).

|
Course contents:
Fundamental concepts, methods and principles of modelling and system analysis. Problem formulation, model construction, validation and experimentation. Interpretive modelling and quantitative modelling. Fundamental concepts in discrete-event simulation and continuous simulation (System Dynamics). Applications of discrete-event simulation, continuous simulation and optimisation; applications are selected from different areas with focus on manufacturing and transportation.
