Valid for year : 2008

TMHL55 Mechanics of Materials, 6 ECTS credits.
/Materialmekanik/

For:   COM   ENG   M

Prel. scheduled hours: 64
Rec. self-study hours: 96

  Area of Education: Technlogy

Subject area: Mechanical Engineering

  Advancement level (G1, G2, A): A

Aim:
The course is to give the student a comprehensive knowledge of the theory of plasticity and its numerical treatment (FEM), and the ability to independently apply this knowledge to concrete problems. At the end of the course the student shall be able to
  • give an account of basic aspects of the classical plasticity- and creep theory
  • give an account of the numerical treatment of plasticity problems by FEM
  • formulate and analytically solve problems regarding the stress- and deformation states in bodies and structures undergoing plastic flow or creep
  • identify unrealistic results
  • use FEM to solve plasticity problems

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Multi-variable calculus, Solid Mechanics including plate- and shell theory and FEM

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
Lectures, teaching classes and laboratory work.

Course contents:
Perfect plasticity, linear isotropic hardening, linear kinematic hardening, limit analysis, FE-treatment of plasticity problems, large deformation plasticity, creep

Course literature:
Compendium from the institution

Examination:
Written examination
Laboratory work
4,5 ECTS
1,5 ECTS

Course language is Swedish/English.
