| Aim: The aim of the course is to develop the four language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. The main focus will be on general scientific and technical English, but some basic terminology from the area of business and economics will also be introduced. After the course, the students should have increased their vocabulary in these areas and improved their understanding of some of the sociolinguistic concepts which are representative of these fields. Students should have reached a good level of reading comprehension and be able to summarise texts and articles both orally and in writing. Students should have reached a good level of communicative competence. |

| Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered) 5 years English at pre-university level Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding. |

| Organisation: The course, which will be given entirely in English and be taught by native English speakers, will be organised in the form of 2 lessons a week. All students are expected to participate actively and attendance is compulsory for certain lessons. In the spring semester the course will begin week 6 and then continue during the whole semester. |

| Course contents: The course comprises texts with relevance both to science and technology and to economics as well as those of more general interest. Texts are chosen to facilitate and motivate the training of communicative skills, both spoken and written. Reading skills, writing skills and note taking skills are practised and oral presentation techniques are trained. |

| A written examination based on the course work. In addition, students are required to reach the required level for a pass grade in oral presentation as well as satisfactorily complete assignments given during the course. |
