Aim:
The aim of the course is to introduce a basic knowledge of modern chemistry. In particular the following areas will be dealt with: - Chemical nomenclature and definitions. The build-up principles of the periodic table and properties of elements and compounds. Chemical bonding and reactions. Basic laboratory techniques.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
|
|
Course contents:
Chemical nomenclature and stoichiometry. The gas law. Thermochemistry. Chemical equilibrium. The electronic structures of atoms and molecules. Important trends within the periodic table. Intermolecular forces in gases, liquids and solids. The structure of solid compounds, e.g. amorphous and crystalline compounds, ionic compounds, covalent networks. Colligative properties. Colloids. Chemical reaction kinetics, rate laws and the Arrhenius equation. Thermodynamics: the first, second and third laws. Enthalpy, entropy and free energy. Electrochemistry. Descriptive inorganic chemistry.
Laboratory work: the course includes twelve laboratory exercises.
