Aim:
After completing this course the student is expected to be able to
- identify the main security problems in modern computer systems
- evaluate the usefulness of current tools and methods intended to treat such problems
- choose effective methods and techniques for different categories of problems for own constructions or as existing products to be integrated in a system environment.
Detailed knowledge is required in the areas of
- basic computer security requirements (the CIA criteria and their interpretation and relation to audit and authentication)
- common security communication protocols like TLS and IPSec
- theoretical models and available structures for access control
- methods for user authentication
- cryptography as a security tool.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Any of the courses treating basic computer science, operating systems and computer communications.

The course contains lectures, seminars and laboratory work.

Structure and terminology of the subject. Authentication of user identity. Theory and practice for access control. Formal security criteria. Cryptology and its use in security tools. Security problems, tools, protocols and solutions in networks and distributed systems. Security in specific systems such as databases. Security management.
