Aim:
How do diving beetles breathe underwater? Why don�?Tt marine fish get dehydrated? Can reptiles breathe and walk at the same time? How can geese fly over the Himalaias? How do giraffes stand up without fainting? Could Dumbo truly fly? Why man cannot drink seawater? This and many other questions will be addressed in the course with an interactive problem-based approach.
A special emphasis will be placed on the quantitative integration of physiological processes and the role of the nervous and endocrine systems to achieve homeostasis.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
Passed basic subjects in biology (50p, at least 25p theory). Recommended NMAB17 Statistik

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, laboratories and seminars. The course will be structured around 3 weekly problems which the students need to discuss and solve in groups during the week. The lectures will emphasize the main identified problems and a recapitulation seminar will be held at the end of each week to evaluate the newly acquired knowledge. The laboratory exercises are formulated to estimulate hypothesis-driven research using the scientific method and the results obtained will be treated accordingly. Seminars will be held to discuss original research papers.

Course contents:
The course will be centered on 7 week-long topics: metabolism and energetics, digestion, nerve physiology, muscle, circulation, respiration and osmoregulation.
