Aim:
The aim of the course is to give fundamental theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of spectrometry and chromatography.

Prerequisites: (valid for students admitted to programmes within which the course is offered)
NKEA26 General Chemistry, NKEA27 Organic Chemistry 1 and NKEB23 Inorganic Chemistry A (or equivalent courses).

Note: Admission requirements for non-programme students usually also include admission requirements for the programme and threshhold requirements for progression within the programme, or corresponding.

Organisation:
The course consists of lectures, laborations and short written tests

Course contents:
Theory of chromatographic separation. Gas chromatography (GC) including sample injection, separation and detection. High performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods such as normal phase and reverse phase HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography and ion chromatography. Introduction to mass spectrometry (MS), GC-MS and HPLC-MS. Molecular ultraviolet/visible absorption spectroscopy and molecular fluorescence. Atomic absorption spectroscopy based upon flame and electrothermal atomization. Atomic emission spectroscopy.
