AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should:

- have acquired developed and advanced knowledge of the multicultural society
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of the Swedish cultural heritage
- have knowledge of cultural customs and political relations of a few migration countries important for Sweden
- have acquired basic knowledge of reasons for migration and immigration, the conditions of immigrants in Sweden and refugee crises.
- demonstrate understanding of different religious and non-religious traditions and lifestyles, especially in the local community
- have knowledge of the attitudes of people in questions concerning cultural meetings
- have knowledge of racism and other forms of discrimination.
CONTENTS
Through studies of the immigration to Sweden from a historical perspective, a basis for studies of migration-driving factors is given. The current situation in immigration areas important for Sweden, the living conditions of people there and how this influences integration actions in Sweden are discussed. The life of immigrants and refugees in their new home country, and how the Swedish majority society is influenced by the encounter with the cultures and lifestyles of minorities are also discussed.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, literature studies, teaching sessions, seminars, group work and discussions with problem-based and thematically orientated working methods. The work is carried out both individually and in groups of different kinds.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined in both oral and written form, individually and in groups. The oral examination consists of presentations of the immigration to Sweden during different periods and how the majority society has been influenced. The written group assignment consists of country and conflict analyses of migration countries important for Sweden and factors important for Swedish integration.

The course is examined through an individual written examination where the course literature is the important starting point.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
