AIM OF THE COURSE
• Students shall be able to analyse and define some major issues in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
• Students shall be able to critically analyse, interpret, reflect on and document different views on children.
CONTENTS
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child as well as the office of the "Ombudman" is studied. The course presents different views on children such as:
Children as autonomous individuals,
Children as objects of protection,
Children as active citizens etc.

Conditions for Children´s rights and participation in issues concerning themselves are in focus.
TEACHING
The course is run in a problem-oriented way, including lectures, seminars and group work. English-speaking groups consisting of 6 - 8 students work together. In groups, students prepare themselves for lectures and for seminars by formulating questions and sending them to the lecturer in advance. Individually they write a paper on one chosen subject for the literature seminar and in the end one paper about conditions for Children´s rights and participation. All students are also opponents on one paper each.
EXAMINATION
Basic knowledge in issues about the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child is examined at a literature seminar, where all students have to be prepared and active at the discussions.. Ability to critically analyse, interpret, reflect on and document different views on children is examined by active participation at the literature seminar, by presenting and defending a paper at the final examination seminar and by being an opponent at another paper.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

At least one year of undergraduate studies. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 550 + TWE-score 4.0, computorbased 213 and internetbased 79), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.0 and no band under 5.0), or equivalent.
GRADING
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
