AIM OF THE COURSE
•The students shall acquire a basic knowledge and understanding of the Swedish society, particularly about Sweden as a Welfare State.
•The students shall be able to critically examine, communicate and summarise a basic knowledge and experiences of the Swedish society
CONTENTS
The course presents different theories about Sweden as a Welfare State. The perspectives include Environment, Economy, Democracy, Integration, Education and Equality. The course also includes a study visit to a pre-school/school
TEACHING
The course is run in a problem-oriented way with lectures, seminars, group work and a study visit. English-speaking groups consisting of 6 - 8 students work together. In groups, students prepare themselves for the lectures and the seminars by formulating questions and sending these questions in advance to the lecturer. Individually they write a paper on one subject chosen among different texts for the literature seminar and a final paper about one relevant issue concerning the Swedish Society. The papers are presented and defended at an examination seminar. Every student is also an opponent on one paper.
EXAMINATION
Basic knowledge and understanding of the Swedish society is examined by prepared written questions to lectures, prepared written questions for the seminars, active participation in discussions at the literature seminar and through an individually written paper. The ability to critically examine, communicate and summarise a basic knowledge of the Swedish society is examined by active participation at the literature seminar, by presenting and defending a paper at the final examination seminar and by being an opponent at another paper.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "ENGELSKA B" is required, or an international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213. At least one year of undergraduate studies.
GRADING
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
