AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for and discuss different research methods and scientific perspectives.
- apply qualitative and quantitative research methods.
- plan, carry out, present and defend an independent thesis, which includes theoretical and empirical studies with relevance to pedagogical work within popular education and/or adult education.
- reflect on the contents and quality of the own independent work.
- critically review the thesis of a fellow student.
CONTENTS
The course covers research methods and scientific perspectives that may function as tools to describe, analyse and understand pedagogical work within popular education and adult education. The course prepares for both work with investigations and evaluations in the own educational daily life as well as for further postgraduate studies.

Research Methods and Scientific Perspectives, 15 HE credits
Forskningsmetodiska ansatser och vetenskapsteoretiska perspektiv. The module covers research methods and scientific perspectives of relevance for pedagogical work. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are covered. Focus is on issues concerning problem formulation, research and study design, data collection and methods of description, processing and interpretation of data.

Thesis, 15 HE credits
Självständigt arbete. The student independently carries out a minor research assignment, defends this and reviews others' research assignments. In the module, the student should choose, limit, define and examine an educational problem. The problem and the processing of it should be presented in a thesis.
TEACHING
The teaching is carried out as four two-day seminars in Linköping during the period September-January, and a final two-day seminar in June. In the course, computer communication is used for continuous contact, management of assignments and thesis supervision.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through written course assignments. Active participation in the course seminars is required. The essay is examined through presentation and defence in an essay seminar. The student also publicly discusses and examines an essay and participates actively and well prepared in the discussion of at least three more.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Either 1) Higher Education Certificate in Folk High School Education with 60 HE credits in educational work according to current programme syllabus from autumn semester 00 or 2) Higher Education Certificate in Folk High School Education, 60 HE credits, according to the older programme syllabus and at least two years of experience in practical pedagogical work or 3) other teaching qualification and at least two years of experience in practical pedagogical work with adults. 4) at least 45 HE credits approved in basic and continuation courses with specialisation in popular education.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
