AIM OF THE COURSE |
Cancer is one of the main causes of death in the industrialised countires. Our understanding of cancer has changed dramatically during the last two decades and this revolution in cancer research is still continuing. The purpose of the course is to provide knowledge about tumour development in genereal including the genetic basis of human cancer. Furthermore, the course will give an overview of cancer by site taking into account different clinical and biological aspects as well as the occurence of specific gene alterations. |
CONTENTS |
Basic concepts in cancer genetics. Control of the cell cycle and cancer. Caretaker genes. Apoptosis and cancer. Immortalization. Tumour progression. Mechanisms of invasion and metastasis. Angiogenesis and cancer. Tumour immunology. Hormones and cancer. Cancer by site: (some fo the following) breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, gynaecologial tumours, malignant melanoma, brain tumours and haematological malignancies. |
TEACHING |
Lectures, laboratory work, tutorial groups and seminars.
The educational method used is problem-based learning (PBL). PBL emphasises the student´s development of free, self-supporting, lifelong learning ability as an instrument for critical inquiry. The students own queries and formulated problems form the basis of PBL. Important is also the student´s ability to take responsibility for his/her own learning, and to seek and evaluate information and knowledge and to train co-operation and flexible attitude to different views and ideas. |
EXAMINATION |
Active participation in tutorial groups and seminars, written reposrt of one of the laboratory works and oral presentation of a deeper study.
Students, which have not passed on the regular examination occasion, are normally offered four additional opportunities according to this syllabus, one of which is close in time to the first examination occasion. Students who have failed three times on the course or part of the course are entitled to request another examiner at the new examination occasion. |
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Bachelor of Science in Biomedicine or other related subjects such as Medicine or Biology. At least three years of full-time undergraduate studies in a relevant main subject. For students in the Medical Biology Programme, 160 credits: Passed semester 1 to 5. Obs! To be admitted to courses taught in English you must fulfil the requirement of at least one year of full-time undergraduate studies. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B" is required, or an international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213. |
