| AIM OF THE COURSE |
| The students should acquire a good knowledge of major traditions of thought in International Relations, with an emphasis on the history of political philosophy of international relations, international theory, and international law. After the completion of the course the students should be able to demonstrate an awareness of the origins and history of the field of International Relations and be conversant with the major theoretical approaches to the subject. |
| CONTENTS |
The course covers the following areas:
• The evolution of international society.
• The history of political philosophy of international relations.
• The history of legal ideas of international relations.
• The history of twentieth century international theory. |
| TEACHING |
| The subject will be delivered by means of lectures, to provide an overview of the readings and issues at hand, and seminars, which allow further possibilities for discussion. All tuition is in English. |
| EXAMINATION |
Mandatory seminars, and written essays.
Students who have failed an examination are normally allowed to retake it on two additional occasions, one of which should be arranged shortly after the first examination.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course three times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Previous studies at least up to a level corresponding to three years of study at a Swedish university, i.e. approximately equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree at a British university. In-depth studies for at least one year in a field relevant to the programme, including a final paper corresponding to approximately ten weeks of study. Major subjects relevant to the programme are e.g. political science, economics and law.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B", or an international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213. |

| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
| COURSE LITERATURE |
| The course literature is decided upon by the department
in question. |
| OTHER INFORMATION |
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed. |
