AIM OF THE COURSE
This course aims to provide a broad outline of primarily British and American culture in a historical perspective. Students will gain insight into the cultural currents and developments through the study of selected aspects of British and American history and contemporary society as well as the history of literature, art and architecture. The course is also intended to develop the student's ability in accordance with accepted scholarly methods.
CONTENTS
The course follows cultural development from the Middle Ages to the present day and is organized as follows:

Survey Course: Cultural History, 4 points

Text and Poetry, 5 points

The study of literary texts from different times and genres including the intensive study of one of Shakespeare's plays. Selected studies in British and American history, the history of ideas, art and architecture.

Survey course: History and Language and Linguistics, 4 points

Basic study of the development of the English language and modern linguistics.

Term paper, 3 points

Under the supervision of a tutor, students will examine in greater depth a particular topic within a cultural, literary or linguistic field. The term paper is intended to introduce the student to scholarly methods of composition and documentation and will be judged both according to content and language ability. (Length: 2000-2500 words).

Cultural Studies, 4 points

Read in conjunction with English 1, this problem-based course deals with modern institutions and issues of particular relevance to contemporary British and American society.
TEACHING
Teaching is carried out in lectures, compulsory seminars and tutorial groups.
EXAMINATION
Examination forms are traditional written exams, take-home exams and continuous oral assessment in seminar groups where active participation is required.

Students who have failed an examination are normally allowed to retake it on two additional occasions, one of which should be arranged shortly after the first examination.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course three times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Exchange students only. At least one year of advanced undergraduate studies of English.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
