| Dialogue and rhetoric of clinical encounters, in which patients’ experiences of illness is the subject matter at hand, are often structured in the form of narratives (illness stories). The aim of this course for the students is to develop an understanding of the processes through which knowledge and power are established in the clinical encounter between patients and health care professionals in focusing on the narrative-hermeneutical tradition in medical humanities and social sciences. |
| Kursinnehåll |
| The course will deal with texts in humanities and social sciences examining the theme of narrativity in health care. Narratives of illness and health-care encounters is a research tradition which has been firmly established recently in disciplines such as bioethics, medical sociology and medical anthropology. The issues discussed in these fields are ontological as well as methodological. In what sense are the narrated experiences of illness and the dialogues of clinical encounters stories? What are the differences between story telling in literature and story telling in real life? And in what sense can the theme of narrativity serve as a research methodology in empirical studies of health care encounters? These are questions dealt with in this course module. |

Active participation in seminars. Discussion of short papers presented by the students. Alternatively as an individual course: A written assignment.
Studerande som underkänts två gånger på kursen eller del av kursen har rätt att begära en annan examinator vid förnyat examinationstillfälle.
Den som godkänts i prov får ej delta i förnyat prov för högre betyg. |

Admission to the Master program in Health and Society or, as a single subject course, a Swedish “grundexamen” (fil. kand.), an international degree corresponding to a Bachelor in Arts and/or Science or studies up to a documented equivalent level. |
