AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- account for psychological and sociological perspectives on religions as expressions of human life,
- demonstrate knowledge of the changing function of religious institutions and conceptions in different societies,
- interpret individual religious experiences and religious behaviours,
- with a basic academic approach, process issues of religious-psychological and religious-sociological nature,
- critically review and objectively relate to research in religious behavioural sciences.
CONTENTS
The course consists of an introduction to the subjects of psychology of religion and sociology of religion.

Psychology of Religions, 7.5 HE credits
The course covers basic issues that concern the relations individual/society and religion/society, cognitive psychology, socio-psychology, depth psychology and religion as well as the theories and view of life of mysticism.

Sociology of Religions, 7.5 HE credits
Introduction to sociology of religion and the research field of sociology of religion. The course focuses on how religion in all its multi-dimensionality relates to society and to different groups in society. The course covers change patterns in relation to society and groups of religions. Introduction in behavioural science methods.
TEACHING
The student's work mainly consists of independent literature studies. Lectures and seminars are included in addition to the independent studies of text material. The seminar sessions are compulsory and in all cases imply work that should be carried out in advance.
EXAMINATION
The courses are generally examined through compulsory seminars, written assignments, written examination and oral presentation. Active individual oral participation in the seminars is required to pass the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

At least 22.5 HE credits from Religious studies - Basic course, or the equivalent.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
