AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- account for knowledge of ancient religions from different cultural spheres,
- demonstrate familiarity with how traditions can be used as identity markers in the present,
- account for how older traditions can be used in fictional texts, film, art or other cultural manifestations,
- independently formulate, carry out and present an assignment that highlights important religious-historical or religious-anthropological issues and themes.
CONTENTS
The contents of the course reflect ancient religions, communication of traditions and the role that older religions still have in society and cultural life. The course includes an individual assignment that highlights use of tradition in modern times. The course also provides an opportunity for advanced studies of specific themes. Through independent fieldwork and/or literature studies, the student presents problem-based work. Themes and literature lists are established by the student in cooperation with the teacher.
TEACHING
The student's effort mainly consists of independent studies of text material. In addition, compulsory seminars, compulsory written assignments, oral presentations and written examination, as well as other types of teaching/working methods may occur, such as film screenings and study visits. As support to the above, teaching is given in the form of lectures. All students are expected to participate actively in seminars.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through compulsory seminars, written assignments, written examination, oral presentation and public discussion. Active participation in the seminars is required to pass the course.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For admission to the course, at least 7.5 HE credits from Religious Studies are required - History of Religions, continuation course, or the equivalent.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
