AIM OF THE COURSE | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
On completion of the course, the student should be able to - use knowledge of non-Christian religions, and some of the religions of the original populations and modern religious formations, - use knowledge of construals and use of history, and how globalisation and modernity influence the design of doctrines, - gain an overview of the relation to dominance and power of women and different ethnic groups, - demonstrate skills and technique in independently applying knowledge by presenting problem areas concerning the religious traditions of modern society. |

The student is trained to see how present-day religions have been inspired by older religions and at the same time are characterised by the modern life world of which they are part. The course includes studies of the non-Christian religions in the contemporary period, as well as one of the religions of the original populations and modern religious formations. The course covers non-alphabetised religions, Judaism, Islam; cultural encounters and ethnicity. The course also covers Hinduism and Buddhism; how religions relate to detraditionalisation, modernity and secularisation; new ritual contexts and religious formations in Swedish society. |

The student's effort mainly consists of independent studies of text material. In addition, compulsory seminars, written assignments, oral presentations and written examination, and other types of teaching/working methods may occur, such as showing film screenings and study visits. As support to the above, teaching is given in the form of lectures. EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course is examined through compulsory seminars, written assignments, written examination, oral presentation and public discussion. Active individual oral participation in the seminars is required to pass the course. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
