The Nordic Region in the Early Modern Period, 7,5 ECTS Credits

AIM OF THE COURSE

After completion of the course the student should be able to -demonstrate knowledge of the emergence of Sweden as a great power -demonstrate knowledge of the political, social, economic and cultural development of the Nordic countries until the demise of Charles XII. -place the above development within the European context. -master the critical and theoretical skills that are the tools of the historian. -demonstrate the ability to conduct and lead discussions, make oral presentations and deliver constructive criticism.

CONTENTS

The course deals with -the Reformation and its aftermath -the 17th century, a period of expansion when Sweden emerged as a great power around the Baltic. -the development of states and their relation to society were important features. -the development of agriculture and industry. -the emergence of enlightened despotism in the Nordic countries. -the beginning of Sweden's demise as a great power.

TEACHING

Instruction will consist mainly of lectures and seminars in which active participation is expected in the compulsory elements. The course requires full-time study, including searching for literature, reading, analyzing and reflecting on relevant literature and preparing the discussions and the written paper.Homework and independent study are a necessary complement to the course. Language of instructions: English

EXAMINATION

Each individual course will be examined by means of a combination of written papers, oral presentations and active participation in seminars. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In-depth studies of approximately three semesters of full-time study in a major subject relevant to the programme. Relevant subjects are, for example, history/social history, cultural history, political science or related fields. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 550 + TWE-score 4.0, computorbased 213 and internetbased 79), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.0 and no band under 5.0), or equivalent.

GRADING

The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F

CERTIFICATE

Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.

COURSE LITERATURE

The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.

OTHER INFORMATION

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
