AIM OF THE COURSE

After completing the course the student will be able to: • plan and produce a video recording for research purposes in an ethically informed manner, • transcribe recorded data according to conversation analytic conventions, • identify interactional phenomena, • observe and describe different types of human interaction, • analyse verbal and non-verbal aspects of interaction, • apply current interaction analytic methods to empirical data, • critically assess research articles in the field, • display an understanding of the historical and theoretical underpinnings of conversation analytic method.

CONTENTS

The course provides a hands-on introduction to the microanalysis of human interaction. It actively involves the students in the full research process starting with ethical considerations, data collection and transcription, and ending with the identification of relevant phenomena and methodological analytic arguments. The course focuses on linguistic and social aspects of interaction in institutions as well as mundane settings, analysing activity types, meaning, learning and understanding. Attention is paid to verbal and nonverbal aspects of human action, including the use of technologies and artefacts in meaning-making. The historical roots of the method will be traced to the emergence of conversation analytic method, encouraging critical discussion of the theory and findings.

TEACHING

Teaching is carried out in the form of lectures, seminars, datasessions, fieldwork and peer-review. The course may be available at English.

EXAMINATION

Examination involves both active participation in the fieldwork, datasessions and seminars, and an oral examination in combination with a written assignment. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course’s study guide Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

A pass in the same subject at foundation and continuation course level, as well as at least 22.5 credits at specialisation course level (or equivalent), including a bachelor’s thesis of 15 credits. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent.

GRADING

The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F

CERTIFICATE

Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus. The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
