AIM OF THE COURSE
The aim of the course is for the student to acquire a knowledge of semiotic theory and semiotic analysis of linguistic and cultural phenomena. Having completed the course with a pass grade, the student can do the following:
- Identify and describe different types of semiotic aspects of linguistic and cultural phenomena plus being able to critically compare the similarities and differences
- Discuss and critically analyse the sign, sign system, expression and content. language, text, culture, meaning, signification, representation, multi-modality.
- Review and present current research in the subject area.
CONTENTS
- Introduction to principles of semiotics and semiotic analysis
- Language, culture and creation of meaning from a semiotic perspective
- Types of signs
- Sign systems
- Multi-modal messages.
TEACHING
Lectures, seminars requiring active partcipation and independent study. The course is given in the form of seminars that demand the student´s active participation. Active participation means reading and digesting the literature, preparation for participation in the seminar discussion, written reports of seminar discussions, independent initiative in finding relevant research literature outside the course literature, and an oral review of a research article together with a written review of the article to be handed in to the course leader. The course demands full-time studies amounting to at least 160 working hours.
EXAMINATION
The individual student is examined by way of written hand-in assignments dealing with the course literature and by way of an assessment of the student´s oral and written presentation and review of a relevant research article.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must, by the closing date for application, hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent.

A major (at least 90 ECTS credits, 3 semesters of full-time study) in one of the following subjects: Comparative Literature, General Linguistics, English, French, German, Spanish, or Swedish, and approximately two semesters of full-time study in another subject relevant to the course is required, including a paper corresponding to approximately 10 weeks of study (15 credits).


Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
