AIM OF THE COURSE
The aim of the course is for the student to acquire knowledge of and a methodology for the study of language and culture in Europe in a historical and comparative European perspective.

After completion of the course the student should be able to:
• describe European linguistic and cultural history and discuss Europe as a linguistic and cultural area.
• discuss and critically analyse literary texts from different periods and genres.
• describe the growth of national literatures in Europe and discuss their role in the development of modern languages and the cultures they bear.
CONTENTS
• Introduction to the subject area language and culture in Europe.
• History of the European languages, literatures and cultures.
• National literatures and languages.
TEACHING
Lectures, student active seminars and independent study.
The course is given in the form of seminars that demand active participation from the students. The students participation demands reading and digesting of the literature, preparation for participation in the seminar discussion, written reports of seminar discussions, independent initiative in finding relevant research literature outside the course literature. Literature studies. Language of instruction: English
EXAMINATION
The individual student is examined by way of written hand-in assignments dealing with the course literature and the content of the lectures. To receive a passing grade for the course, the student must complete and pass all course requirements.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must, by the closing date for application, hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent. A major (at least 90 ECTS credits, 3 semesters of full-time study) in one of the following subjects: Comparative Literature, General Linguistics, English, French, German, Spanish, or Swedish, and approximately two semesters of full-time study in another subject relevant to the course is required, including a paper corresponding to approximately 10 weeks of study (15 credits).
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paper based 575 + TWE-score 4.5, and internet based 90), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent.

GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
