AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- demonstrate knowledge of the strategic resource that information and knowledge constitute in a society characterised by intensive technical, economic and social development,
- demonstrate basic knowledge of retrieving information/literature for scientific knowledge development, problem-based learning (PBL) in schools/higher education institutions, problem-solving, decision making, knowledge development and change in general,
- demonstrate an understanding of available finding aids with use of new information technology and prepare searches in connection with research and/or activities as a teacher, supervisor, decision-maker, etcetera
CONTENTS
The course begins with a general overview of the information or knowledge society's effects regarding our need of competitive intelligence and development on community, organisation and individual levels. The concept of information literacy is defined. This part is intended to provide an introductory perspective on the field and address consequences of technical development, knowledge development, etcetera
The following parts intend an advanced study of some relevant fields:

Scientific knowledge development and scientific communication. Available information resources in society.
Information utilisation for self-administered learning in connection with problem-based learning (PBL) as an educational method and other examining working methods in schools/higher education institutions.
Information utilisation for problem-solving, decision making, change, etcetera in companies, administrations and other organisations.
Information utilisation as a process with its possibilities and obstacles.
Basic information retrieval methodology.
Literature retrieval in an individual subject area.
Report writing and reference management.
TEACHING
The teaching takes the form of lectures, seminars, demonstrations and exercises. The student is also expected to study independently, individually or in groups.
EXAMINATION
The examination constitutes carrying out an advanced assignment that is documented in an essay and discussed at an examination seminar. Course literature should be integrated and presented in the work. The assignment provides an opportunity to study an independently chosen field with relevance to the own studies, research or work more in-depth.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
