AIM OF THE COURSE
The course aims to provide the students with knowledge of the strategic resource that information and knowledge constitutes in modern society and the importance of information competence as a basis for self-administered learning, knowledge of available information resources for resource-based learning and understanding of educational perspectives and methods that promote the development of information literacy.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- use knowledge of what the concept of information literacy means and the importance of information literacy from a lifelong learning perspective,
- independently identify, analyse and describe a reality-based need for information,
- search and evaluate information on a scientific basis,
- use relevant search tools (reference work, databases, folders and the Internet),
- interpret and write correct references,
- account for legal and ethical limitations of using various types of material,
- use educational perspectives and methods that promote development of information literacy.
CONTENTS
The contents of the course are focused on
- knowledge and learning in the information society,
- information literacy - components and learning processes,
- information retrieval strategies,
- source evaluation,
- report writing,
- reference and citation techniques,
- forms of knowledge and the relationship between approach to knowledge, teaching and learning,
- educational methods for development of information literacy,
- information retrieval as a learning process from student and teacher perspectives,
- planning of teaching information literacy, including implementation and evaluation.
TEACHING
Lectures, seminars, practical exercises, case- and scenario-based work in groups and independently, individual advanced study project. The student is also expected to study independently, individually or in groups.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through an advanced assignment that is documented in a paper and is ventilated at a final seminar. The course provides an opportunity for advanced studies in a chosen field relevant to the course, studies or field of work.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
