After completion of the course the student should be able to: - explain and account for basic issues and perspectives in intersectional gender studies and gender politics, historically and in the contemporary world - critically reflect on the significance of gender in its intersections with other social categorizations - orally and in writing discuss and reflect on key concepts and debates in intersectional gender studies and gender politics - communicate knowledge in English via Internet - work with assignments within intersectional gender studies and gender politics - in English, orally and in writing, receive and give constructive criticism. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course introduces and prepares students for work with intersectional gender issues and for further studies in intersectional gender studies and gender politics in a globalized world. A comprehensive introduction to basis knowledge about the emergence of contemporary intersectional gender, sexuality and ethnicity studies, policy and politics is provided. The course offers knowledge and skills for students who aim at working professionally with intersectional gender issues in international settings, institutions and organizations – as agents for change. Throughout the course the students and the teachers work actively with language skills, aiming at enabling the students to discuss and communicate professionally on intersectional gender issues in English. Generally, the course will stimulate indenpendent and critical reflection. Intersectional gender studies and gender practices in a globalized world. The course module will deal with specific feminist issues and focus on different intersections of gender and other social categorizations such as ethnicity and sexuality. Transnational issues such as gendered citizenship, feminist theories of issues such violence, trafficking, whiteness will be studied. Furthermore, the module emphasizes the interdisciplinary character of gender studies, providing examples of gender research in various disciplines as well as on gender mainstreaming at regional, national and supranational levels. Through online teaching and socio-technical pedagogics the student will be trained in ways to systematically search for empirical data and to present research and practices, as well as to communicate in a scholarly manner, via different interfaces and social media. This course module provides a comprehensive introduction to history of the emergence of contemporary gender studies and gender politics. This includes a focus on historical genealogies of gender studies and gender politics and their relation to feminist theory and activism. Different theoretical perspectives as well as historical and current debates in intersectional gender studies and gender politics in Europe and on the broader international scene are also presented. Gender studies scholars as agents for change Through work with different kinds of assignments, the course module will provide a forum for training how to discuss and reflect, orally and in writing, theories and practices in intersectional gender studies and gender politics. Different fields, related to gender studies, such as postcolonial studies, critical sexuality studies, queer studies, and gender mainstreaming will be included in the discussions and reflections. |

The course will combine online teaching with intensive face-to-face seminars on campus. The course consists of lectures, seminars and course assignments. both in the face-to-face classroom and online. The course is examined by individually written exams, active participation and mandatory course assignments. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the course study guide. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
