After the course the student shall: • know what Nordic culture stands for and how to define what culture is. • know how to describe what Nordic culture is, in relation to the content of the course. From the program in the course the student shall know how to make comparisons between culture and the visit in Sweden as a student. • Know and describe knowledge of both material and immaterial cultural heritage. • Know the main Swedish traditions, the high festivals and Swedes relation to nature. • In general know and describe different cultural and geographical areas, as the city and the countryside. |

CONTENTS | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The main content of the course explores our Nordic Cultural and geographical environments. The course give insights into Nordic cultural life, Culture is “known as the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artefacts expressed in for example local Identity, Folk-art, Craft, Dance and Music. The course will also give the participants the possibility to take part in Nordic outdoor activities as part of their recreation and learning. From these environments the following will be studied and explored: Local identity, history, countryside life and citizenship. How to live in countryside and in a city today? Our cultural heritage a material and immaterial culture. In this course we explore: Outdoor life - a way of living. The right of common access to nature. What does nature means to Swedes and our relation to nature? Folkloristic tales and sagas, traditional Nordic dances and songs and the Nordic traditions and the high festivals. The Nordic folk-art and music and traditional cooking as a way of learning culture. |

Nordic culture includes two-attendance compulsory live- in seminaries in different parts of cultural environments. After seminars personal written reports should be presented. Group presentations should be supported by (documentation form both outside and within the resources available through the ICT. Lectures, seminars, residential (live-in seminars) courses, Experiential learning through experience and workshops, self studies and group works. Language of instruction: English |

EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Students will be required to give a written documentation of culture and a comparative study of culture and your experiences within the Nordic Culture seminars. Written personal final report is a part of final examination. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

At least one year of full-time undergraduate studies.
