AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

- describe the early modes of expression of western theatre
- put the texts and forms of theatre in their historical context
- analyse the importance of the Greek drama for following epochs and for our own time
- have skills and ability to use the texts and means of expressions of the Greek theatre
CONTENTS
The course focuses on the antique drama and its development from theoretical and practical perspectives. This means that the course contains both text from plays and theoretical backgrounds to the Greek drama, as well as stage performances of its contemporary period. Performances of its time and the meaning of its structures for our own time are highlighted in the course, as are more recent drama that is based on the Greek theatre and its dramatics.
TEACHING
The course consists of seminars with discussions and analyses of the literature of the course and presentations, independent and in groups. The course focuses equally on practical parts, for example improvisations and exercises that relate to the literature of the course.
EXAMINATION
Written and oral presentations are examined in groups and individual. Active participation in the examining seminars is required. The examination includes a practical final presentation related to the course literature with own reflections.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
