History 1:2 The History of Antiquity and the Middle Ages , 9 ECTS Credits

AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- use general knowledge of essential historical contexts and the main features of history
- analytically and critically arrange facts for explanatory descriptions in historical contexts
- demonstrate basic awareness of how choices of perspective based on class, gender and diversity, influence the understanding of our past.
CONTENTS
A general study of events and social progress from a global perspective, for example the earliest high cultures, the antique Greek and Roman societies, the feudal and Christian societies of the early Middle Ages and the crisis of the feudal society. The fundamental features of the history of the Nordic countries from the earliest period is covered with an emphasis on the development in Sweden and particularly Östergötland. Through comparisons between different productions, different historical views can be illustrated, discussed and analysed.
TEACHING
Lectures, compulsory seminars that are prepared independently or in groups and independent studies of the course literature are the main working methods of the course.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through a written examination. Active participation in the compulsory seminars is also required.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.

GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
