| AIM OF THE COURSE |
After completion of the course the student should be able to
- describe, compare and interpret traditions and usages of water in time and space
- perform a field study in social science methodological aspects orally and in written form discuss problems of water and its role in the society
- critically analyse consequences of water use from different perspectives of power and argue for alternative solutions

| CONTENTS |
The course includes three themes: Water related settlements and resource management, Water in a growing town and The power of water and climate change. Within these the following aspects will be discussed:
- Demand for fresh water of good quality.
- Geographical friction and solutions.
- Technical equipment and innovations. Organisation of labour.
- Economic prerequisite for and consequences of water supply.
- Sustainable aspects of water.
- Restrictions and institutions for water management and supply.
- Gender and social perspectives on water resource allocation.
- Cultural, religious and symbolic understanding of water.
- Narratives of water management and distribution. |
| TEACHING |
| In addition to self-studies, the subject will be delivered by means of lectures, to provide an overview of the readings and issues at hand, and seminars that allow further opportunities for discussion and reflection. There will also be excursions and field work. Two weeks will be held in Greece. Language of instruction: English. |
| EXAMINATION |
The course is examined through a combination of active participation in seminars, a paper and a report based on field studies. Detailed information about the examination can be found in the courses study guide.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course twice are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
To be eligible to the course the student must have fulfilled 90 ECTS in fields as environmental science, water resources, geography, economics, social anthropology, political science, hydrology, engineering, chemistry, history and biology or equivalent.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to Engelska B/Engelska 6. |
| GRADING |
| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
| COURSE LITERATURE |
| The course literature is decided upon by the department
in question. |
| OTHER INFORMATION |
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed. |
