AIM OF THE COURSE
After completed the course the student should be able to:
- identify and describe current issues related to sustainable and low-cost sanitation.
- critically analyse and discuss scientific publications on the subject of sustainable sanitation.
- discuss human use of resources in a historical and future perspective.
- critically assess solutions for sustainable sanitation.
-analys cases and present results orally and in writing.
CONTENTS
The aim of the course is to understand possibilities and limitations to avert the present sanitation crises for humans and the environment in expanding urban and peri-urban areas. The students become familiar with approaches to analyse impacts of management choices, nature’s responses and available technologies on achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals for sanitation. The course is interdisciplinary and strongly related to international research. Management issues at society and household levels are combined with various technical arrangements of flows of used water and organic ‘waste’ products from households and the reuse of nutrients and water for e.g. food production. This course will also focus on technical design of sanitation systems including collection and treatment arrangements as well as flows of used nutrients and water in society.
TEACHING
Lectures, seminars, individually written assignments and oral presentations. In addition to those, the students are expected to study on their own.Language of instructrion: English
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through written tasks, oral presentations and active participation in seminars.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must, by the closing date for application, hold a bachelor´s degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper of equivalent. Relevant background is studies within natural science, social science, health science, humanities or engineering that relate to the environmental, social or ecenomic aspects of sustainable development.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B", i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 550 + TEW-score 4.0, computerbased 213 and internetbased 79), IELTS, academic (minimum score: overall band 6.0 and no band under 5.0), or equivalent.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
