| AIM OF THE COURSE |
Having completed the course the student should be able to:
* Understand how present environmental problems have evolved, how they have been managed and at a basic level identify future potential problems and solutions,
* Assess dimensions in environmental problems from a historical point of view – both in a global and a regional perspective,
* Show a conceptual understanding of the basics behind the pollution problems from both a natural sciences perspective and from the societal point of view,
* Critically analyse the interplay between natural and anthropogenic impact,
* Demonstrate understanding of potential future environmental challenges,
* Give evidence of understanding of major options to manage environmental problems,
* Discuss different approaches of the interaction between human and environment from an interdisciplinary point of view,
* Gain knowledge about the key concepts in environmental history,
* Critically asses current environmental problems in their historical and anthropogenic context. |
| CONTENTS |
| The focus of the course is on the interaction over time between societies and the environment. It covers environmental changes in the five spheres of the environment: the lithosphere, pedosphere, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the biosphere. The course provides advanced understanding of the driving forces behind the pollution and natural resource depletion in these spheres. The students learn to understand, examine and analyse the historic development of interaction between human and the environmen, as well as causes behind environmental degradation and potential solutions. Through the multidisciplinary approach, the linkage between the natural and social science perspectives will be focused upon. |
| TEACHING |
| Lectures will provide an overview of the readings and anchor the knowledge base of the subject. The gain of knowledge is reinforced during seminars and discussions. |
| EXAMINATION |
The course is examined through active participation in seminars and through a final written, individual examination.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent. Relevant background is studies within natural science, social science, health science, humanities or engineering that relate to the environmental, social or economic aspects of sustainable development.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 550 + TWE-score 4.0, computorbased 213 and internetbased 79), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.0 and no band under 5.0), or equivalent. |
| GRADING |
| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.
