AIM OF THE COURSE
Having completed the course, the student should be able to:
* Assess dimensions in environmental problems from a historical point of view – both in a global and a regional perspective,
*Account for enhanced knowledge on sources environmental effects and possible solutions,
* Conceptually understand the basis of pollution problems from both a natural sciences perspective and from the societal point of view,
* Critically analyse the interplay between natural and anthropogenic impact,
* Use concepts in environmental history analysis
* Have the capacity to communicate environmental issues orally and in text,
* Identify probable future environmental challenges,
* Assess different approaches of the interaction between human and environment from an interdisciplinary point of view,
* Critically and scientifically asses current environmental problems in the their historical and anthropogenic context,
* Assess major options to manage environmental problems,
*Critically examine how present environmental problems have evolved, how they have been managed and assess future potential problems and solutions.
CONTENTS
This course provides an in-depth understanding of environmental changes induced by energy consumption, industrial processes as well as water and land use. The course will provide an elaborated understanding of the driving forces behind environmental changes. The students will increase their capacity to analyse the historic development of interaction between human and causes behind environmental degradation and potential solutions. Through the multidisciplinary approach, the linkage between the natural and social science perspectives will be focused upon from both a, natural sciences and social sciences perspective.
TEACHING
Lectures will provide an overview of the readings and anchor the knowledge base of the subject. The gain of knowledge is reinforced during seminars and discussions.
EXAMINATION
The course is examined through active participation in seminars and through an individual written scientific report.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree/kandidatexamen (equivalent for example a professional degree) of at least 180 ECTS credits, including a 15 ECTS credit degree paper or equivalent. Relevant background is studies within natural science, social science, health science, humanities or engineering that relate to the environmental, social or economic aspects of sustainable development.
Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 550 + TWE-score 4.0, computorbased 213 and internetbased 79), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.0 and no band under 5.0), or equivalent.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.

Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
