AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student will becompetent in:
-understanding of the role of theory in science and arts
-scrutinzing scientific documents from a methodological point of view
-understanding concepts that are central in the field of theory of science, and
-finding relevant information and evaluating different sources of information.
CONTENTS
The course is based on current ideas and discussions of the role of theory in the production of scientific research and literature. It will also analyze how different methods are designed, developed, presented and applied in different kinds of research, that is, the natural sciences, the social sciences, the humanities and interdisciplinary science. Concepts which are central in the field theory of science will be interpreted and discussed, as well as controversies related to the uses and understandings of them. Different sources of information, mainly those which are accessible through libraries, are presented, and the students will get aquinted with their possibilities and functioning.
TEACHING
The teaching will mainly be in the form of seminars, where the teachers as well as the students contribute with introductory remarks prepared beforehand and comments. Both texts that represent the field theory of science and examples of contemporary scientific texts, that is, articles from scientific journals, dissertation thesis, project reports and applications for funding etc will be discussed and scrutinized. Language of instructions: English
EXAMINATION
The examination will be in the form of obligatory seminars, complemented with the writing of short reflections on the topics.



Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "ENGELSKA B" is required, or an international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213. iELTS: at least overall score 6.0. To be eligible to the course the student must have fulfilled 120 ECTS where of at least 90 ECTS in fields as environmental science, water resources, geography, economics, social anthropology, political science, hydrology, engineering, chemistry, history and biology or equivalent.
GRADING
The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F
