The students should acquire an understanding of the intricate links between climate change, energy utilisation, recycling and other key concepts in sustainable development. This should enable the students to discuss these links from different perspectives with the aim to critically examine their claimed impact on society.
The course will give the students basic understanding of the climate system, how humans may contribute to a changing climate through the export of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, but also to give viable options to mitigate these effects. Bioenergy technologies will be emphasised e.g. by the use of biomass derived energy and a means of recycling of waste products. The students will attain basic knowledge of the natural processes used in biotechnology to meet the demand on bioenergy availability. The students will also study how climate change affects nature and society, and potential consequences of options for mitigation or adaptation to climate change, e.g. the impact on soil and land use resulting from a conversion to bioenergy-based fuels leading to altered production in agriculture and forestry.

At the end of the course the students should have ability to

Knowledge and understanding
* identify and describe current issues related to climate, bioenergy and recycling
* understand how processes in nature and society affects the climate

Theoretical and practical competence
* apply key concepts for advanced analysis in the areas of climate, bioenergy and recycling and apply them to viable solutions
* competently communicate both orally and in text regarding climate, bioenergy and recycling issues

Critical assessment approaches
* critically and scientifically assess problems related to climate, bioenergy and recycling by evaluating current scientific work
Lectures, seminars and workshops are the basic forms of education. Language of instructions: English
The examination will be in the form of mini-essays. Students who have failed an examination are normally allowed to retake it on at least two additional occasions, one of which should be arranged shortly after the first examination.

Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "ENGELSKA B" is required, or an international proficiency test, e.g. TOEFL, minimum score 550/213. iELTS: at least overall score 6.0. To be eligible to the course the student must have fulfilled 120 ECTS where of at least 90 ECTS in fields as environmental science, water resources, geography, economics, social anthropology, political science, hydrology, engineering, chemistry, history and biology or equivalent.
