| AIM OF THE COURSE |
The aim of the course is to gain scientific understanding of global environmental issues from a sustainable development perspective.
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- describe and analyse the various fields of sustainable development from the social, ecological and economic perspective.
- create and conduct a project on a sustainable development issue with the help of relevant scientific information.
- demonstrate various analyses of environmental and resource preconditions for global relations. Relate such analyses to a social, political, environmental and economic framework on a global and local scale.
- critically analyse and discuss the impact of human use of resources in a historical and future perspective. |
| CONTENTS |
| The awareness of environmental issues has, to a high degree, contributed to an increased attention towards global relationships during the last several years. This course focuses on the question of how global flows of resources, trade, materials and goods have developed, particularly during the post-war period, as well as on how the political and ideological debates on these issues have developed. Additionally, different theories concerning these changes are evaluated. This course is interdisciplinary; both social and natural sciences will be considered in the course, and through laboratory experiments, field excursions, lectures and seminars, students gain a scientific understanding of global environmental problems. |

| Lectures, seminars, laboratory exercises, field excursions. In addition to those, the students are expected to study on their own. Language of instruction: English |
| EXAMINATION |
The course is examined through active participation in seminars, laboratory exercises, and individual written essays.
Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.
Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |
| ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS |
At least one year of full-time undergraduate studies. Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 575 + TWE-score 4.5, internetbased 90 TWE-score 20), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.5 and no band under 5.5), or equivalent. Exemption from Swedish B. |

| The course is graded according to the ECTS grading scale A-F |
| CERTIFICATE |
| Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division. |
