COURSE CATEGORY   Single Subject Course
MAIN FIELD OF STUDY   Vatten i natur och samhälle - VNA
SUBJECT AREA
  COURSE CODE   744A14
AIM OF THE COURSE
After completed the course the student should be able to
- show knowledge on principles of barrier techniques used in different applications for the protection of resources and the environment,,
- identify and discuss different physical, chemical and biological means for the control of transfer and transformation of pollutants in different situations,
- discuss national and EG legislations governing the use of barriers for some important cases.
CONTENTS
The course contains theoretical and practical parts. The theoretical parts on controls of transfers and transformations will be presented by bringing in cases such as landfills, mining waste deposits, contaminated soils and sediments, water supply, etc. The legislation of given the dimensioning values for some of the cases will be included. The practical parts are given as field visits including sampling in relation to barrier functions and following analyses in the laboratory. The field visits will also give insight to how barrier issues are handled by companies working with waste and pollution problems.
TEACHING
The course is based on lectures, seminars, field visits and laboratory analysis. In addition to those, the students are expected to study on thier own. Language of instruction: English
EXAMINATION
Seminars, field sampling and laboratory work are obligator parts and will be accounted for in written reports. The different theoretical parts of the course will continuously be examined with written tests.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
