AIM OF THE COURSE
On completion of the course, the student should be able to
- use advanced knowledge in cultural analysis and to understand social sciences theories and methods,
- present knowledge of and practical experience in socio-anthropological research methods,
- independently carry out a limited scientific work based on own acquired material.
CONTENTS
Current Theory, 7.5 HE credits
The course covers current social sciences theories in relation to socio-anthropological issues and contemporary research.

Anthropological Research Methods, 7.5 HE credits
The course covers anthropological research methods and analysis, text production, and ethical issues concerning research.

Thesis, 15 HE credits
The module comprises an independently planned and individually completed thesis work that satisfies basic socio-anthropological scientific requirements. The results are presented in writing (thesis). The thesis should be based on the analysis of own empiricism about a defined social or cultural phenomenon.
TEACHING
The course work mainly consists of independent literature studies. In addition, there will be teaching in the form of lectures, film screenings, seminars, work in groups and individual supervision. The seminars in all cases imply work that should be carried out in advance.
EXAMINATION
The first module is examined in part continuously within the scope of the teaching through presenting the results of group work in writing, and in part at the end of the course through an individual assignment presented in writing (take-home examination). The second module is examined through research plan, presented in writing, for the course thesis work at the end of the module. The third module is examined through an individual assignment in writing (essay) at the end of the module. Also included in the module is publicly discussing and examining others' theses.

Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination.

Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

For admission to the course, completed Social Anthropology, continuation course is required, with at least 22.5 HE credits approved, including the essay.
GRADING
A grade of Pass with Credit, Pass or Fail is given for the course
CERTIFICATE
Course certificate is issued by the Faculty Board on request. The Department provides a special form which should be submitted to the Student Affairs Division.
COURSE LITERATURE
The course literature is decided upon by the department in question.
OTHER INFORMATION
Planning and implementation of a course must take its starting point in the wording of the syllabus. The course evaluation included in each course must therefore take up the question how well the course agrees with the syllabus.

The course is carried out in such a way that both men´s and women´s experience and knowledge is made visible and developed.
