After completion of the course the student will be able to - use knowledge of modern information retrieval skills, such as evaluation and validation of information and information sources, - demonstrate knowledge of contemporary research topics and theoretical concepts such as network society, knowledge networks, global information flows, disinformation and propaganda, and the relationship between media and democracy, - use skills in information retrieval, including optimal use of search language, interrogating national and international databases, using WWW search engines and intelligent agents, searching the 'Dark Web'. |

The course is a laboratory course developing the relation between production and theoretical perspectives with the emphasis on research and information production on the Internet. It focuses on issues of the development of the WWW and the new roles of worldwide information and communication sharing. Recent years have seen an explosion in the amount of information being published online; there are now literally thousands of millions of documents available on the WWW. Electronic networking and a range of technologies enabling communication have also burgeoned. In today's 'information age' students, researchers, journalists and others need to be online literate as well as having a critical and analytic perspective on new forms of ICT:s developed. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Practical sessions will be conducted in a computer laboratory. Lectures and seminars will be partly classroom-based and partly conducted in a virtual environment. Readings and seminars will focus on topics such as network society, knowledge networks, global information flows, disinformation and propaganda, and the relationship between media and democracy. Classes will be conducted in English. The course paper may be written in either Swedish or English. Lecturers participating in this course will include international researchers and tutors who will conduct online seminars. |

EXAMINATION | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The readings and seminars will form the basis of one course project/electronic publication. Students will be required to research, produce and write on a topic of their choice. Students who have failed an examination are normally allowed to retake it on two additional occasions, one of which should be arranged shortly after the first examination. Students failing an exam covering either the entire course or part of the course two times are entitled to have a new examiner appointed for the reexamination. Students who have passed an examination may not retake it in order to improve their grades. |

Documented knowledge of English equivalent to "Engelska B"; i.e. English as native language or an internationally recognized test, e.g. TOEFL (minimum scores: Paperbased 550 + TWE-score 4.0, computorbased 213 and internetbased 79), IELTS, academic (minimum score: Overall band 6.0 and no band under 5.0), or equivalent. |
